I can attribute my love of music to my mother. Mom has always kept up with her music, even now as a senior (sorry mom). She cleaned the house from top to bottom every Saturday. While doing so, she ALWAYS had her music blasting. Loud enough to even be heard over the top of a screaming vacuum. Cue Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and my introduction to one of the most iconic songwriters of all time.
“Breakdown or go ahead and give it to me”, she’d yell while aggressively scrubbing the floors or washing the windows. “And I’m FREEEEE FREEEE FALLING….”
Carrying on later in my development as a musician and songstress, Tom Petty’s songs always echoed in my head. Cruising in high school on the country back roads to the “Wildflowers” album. Windows rolled down, cigarette in hand and an open road in front of me. His songs had that power. To make you feel free.
This month has been off to a dark start in the news of the music industry with the passing of Tom and the shootings at Las Vegas at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. Both of these have hit me close to home as my parents have their home in Las Vegas and for my love of Tom Petty. Let’s change the tides and spread the light of the music that Petty gifted us all with. What a legend. Rest in Peace.
